Conjunctivitis and Homeopathy

Conjunctivitis and Homeopathy

Are you afraid of "Conjuctivitis" occuring as epidemic especially in the rainy seasons aka as "Madras eye".

Let us know what does that mean. To be very brief, eye’s outer most layer is called “conjunctiva” and inflammation of this is called “Conjunctivitis.” Generally, this can be caused by bacteria, virus, or allergy. The symptoms of this condition are redness of the eyes (due inflammation flow of the blood is increased to the conjunctiva), excessive watering of the eyes (as flow increases this causes the excessive discharge of tears), and inability to see sunlight (also called “photophobia” and is the reason the person wears dark cooling spectacles). The most common type of conjunctivitis, the people are afraid, is viral conjunctivitis as this is highly contagious (spreads from the suffers to others). The myth that if someone sees the sufferer by eye-to-eye contact will get this disease is wrong. The spreading of this infection happens through nasal or oral discharges especially coughing or sneezing spreads the disease through air (medically called “air-borne infection”). So it is important to avoid exposing to the nasal or oral discharges of the sufferers and the sufferers are advised to block the discharges by holding cloth against their nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing or else they are bound to spread the infection to their near and dear ones as this is a very highly contagious disease.

The symptoms severity will be there for at least 3-5 days from the onset generally does not need any medications unless infected by bacteria. Relief can be achieved by frequently cleaning the eyes with cold water, if the irritation is severe you can even go for packing the eyes by cotton swabs dipped in cold water for few minutes, and by protecting the eyes from bright sun light by wearing dark glasses.

Homeopathy provides excellent relief and even protects from getting infection if taken before exposure. The following drugs can be used during the suffering, should be taken under supervision of a homeopathic physician.

Euphrasia: Euphrasia 1M pills can be taken orally during the suffering. Euphrasia drops can be installed in the eyes which will relieve the congestion very effectively.

Kali Muriaticum 6x 3 tablets 3 times a day can benefit discharges.

Further more Pulsatilla 200 three pills twice, i.e. morning and night for 3 days can be taken as a preventive medication.

Many more homeopathic medicines are indicated based upon symptomatology.

Interactions of the Immune System and Central Nervous System - Help through Homeopathy

Interactions of the Immune System and Central Nervous System - Help by Homeopathy.

It is really fascinating to know the interactions of the immune system and central nervous systems as is also the current topic of research in occupational and social health as considered by many eminent researchers. To understand the relation of these two we need to know a little bit of basics regarding both. I will first make a brief outline of the overview of immune system followed by the interactions as would be preferred by most of the readers in Part-1. In Part- 2 we would try to understand the drastic effects these interactions between immune system and central nervous system can end up with. Finally, I would like to brief you how “HOMEOPATHY” can come at the rescue of the sufferer or the patient in Part-3.

PART-1

Let us start with developing an “Overview of immune system” in brief. Immune system is the one that is having the capacity to protect the body from the foreign pathogen invasions – as from various sources such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. This mission is accomplished through various mechanisms and is done at various levels by many types of immune cells. I think we all knew what happens when this system fails or comprises as seen in various disorders, among which the deadliest one as known to all by this century, AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome).

The cells and tissues that constitute the immune system are derived from the bone marrow. The precursor cell being the “stem cell” which can differentiate itself into various other cells as required and those cells are going to be matured into the B cells (matured in bone marrow), T cells (matured in thymus gland), and natural killer cells (NKC). The stem cell can also differentiate into other immune cells – monocytes and granulocytes which can further form as macrophages. The below schemata will explain you the major cells of immune system. Fig immune cells schemata.

The functions of immune system can be divided into natural and acquired based on the need for activation of the cells. The first line of defense against infectious agents being the “natural immunity or nonspecific immunity.” The mononuclear phagocytic cells and the NKC (natural killer cells) are the ones which do this. This combat is a bit complicated with a long series of events, explanation of which is beyond this article. But we need to know that various chemicals are involved in this combat resulting the death of the pathogens which include but not limited to tumor necrotizing factor (TNF), Interlukin-1 (IL-1) to Interlukin-6 (IL-6). The second line of defense, as generally the bigger cells getting into action, will start once the need for specific antibody arises, and is called the “acquired immunity or specific immunity.” This is accomplished by the most specialized and evolved cells the “T cells “ and “B cells”. The recognition of the specific pathogens is done by the specific cells called the “antigens” produced by the pathogens on their death or may even be present on the cell walls. These are chemically recognized and are combated by the specialized immune cells and so are also called as “antibodies.” Again the schema of the combat is a bit complicated making me unable to go beyond in this article. As per the basic requirement let us know some the mediators in this vital combat. The process of recognition starts by demarcating the “major histocompatible molecules (MHC)” on the cell surfaces of the pathogens as done by the T cells which can differentiate itself into varied cells types by its surface molecule, called “clusters of differentiation (CD)”. This CD is seen in various forms ranging from CD2 to CD71 in which few are only commonly identified. The major important differentiation of T cells will be CD4 and CD8, which causes the major damage to the pathogen cells. (Of note these are the forms that are lacked in acquired immune deficiency syndrome, AIDS). The other important cells, B cells will further differentiate into “Immunoglobulins (Ig)” and the types are IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, and IgD. These are the ones that are generally seen in allergic reactions. This is how the combat between the pathogens (disease causing agents) and our cells will go on. Last but not least, the descendants of B cells or T cells will become memory cells which may live for many years and provide us immediate and robust immunity to those specific antigens if attacked again. This phenomenon is used in “vaccinations”, where in you generate memory cells towards specific pathogens and get protection for many years to come.

Connection of the Immune system with the Central Nervous System:

The information regarding nervous system is very robust and beyond the limit of this article. Recollect the basic science classes about nervous system explaining that the whole body is connected with nerve circuits from the brain to the parts or organs of the body and the organs in which the immune cells were born, developed, and matured i.e, bone marrow, lymph tissues, spleen etc are no exception. We also know that these circuits carry out the function of taking the impulses from the organs to the brain and vice versa. Based on this and many other functions one way of dividing nerves is into sympathetic and parasympathetic. And investigations showed that all these organs related to immune system are connected with sympathetic nerves which can either excite or control the growth and maturation of immune cells.

“Stress” the culprit, and Immune System:

Of late, we are hearing the word “Stress” as much as the word “disease” and it has been the subject of study for many. Stress became a part of human life. The effects are seen and discussed from a pregnant mother to the great old grandfather and is not excluding any stages of life neither the infant, childhood, teenage, adulthood, professional or career, to the old age. A detailed note on “Stress” would be coming soon. Many investigations had proved the strong relationship between “Stress” and the “Immune System”.

Animal Studies: Experiments of late 1960s to 70s indicated that “Stressors (stress causing agents or conditions)” like crowding, isolation, shock, etc increased the death rate of the animals from immune-linked diseases. And the depth of investigations went to the level of identifying which stressor would affect which immune cells function. Eg. Heat stress in mouse caused diminished hypersensitivity in the mouse, while isolation and exposure to noise has decreased the immune cells generation itself. All these experiments concluded that stress-induced psychological state of the animal would affect the immune system a lot.

Human Studies: This has been of great tougher research but is also one of the hot researches that are going on now. Studies till now suggested that stressors decrease the immune response both but quality and quantity. Some of the research points demonstrates this as the examination stress was decreasing number of T cells and antibody responses to hepatitis B in the study involving medical students of New York as well as caregivers to Alzheimer’s disease patients showed increased titers of herpes simplex. Many more experiments did demonstrate a strong link between stress and immune system.

All these studies show that there is strong relation between the immune system and Central Nervous System.

Interaction of Immune System and Central Nervous system - Help from homeopathy in enchancing this.

Upcoming topic is a very interesting topic:

"Interactions of Immune System and Central Nervous System" . This topic deals with the way both the immune system and nervous system in body are linked and act together to protect us from pathogenic invasions of bacteria, viruses, other toxic agents. Then understand how homeopathy can help in enchancing this relation....

SUNSTROKE AND HOMEOPATHY

SUNSTROKE AND HOMEOPATHY

The term “Sunstroke” or “heat stroke” is a synonym for “Hyperthermia”. It is an acute condition in which the body is unable to regulate the thermal mechanism and either absorbs or produces excess amount of heat than it can regulate. Drugs or environmental factors like exposure to excessive heat waves can cause this condition.

This is a due to failure of the “perspiration” mechanism of our body. This is a very acute condition and can also become a medical emergency.

The signs and symptoms include Headache, nausea, dizziness. . Blood pressure may drop significantly from dehydration, leading to possible fainting or dizziness, especially if the victim stands suddenly. Heart rate and respiration rate will increase (tachycardia and tachypnea) as blood pressure drops and the heart attempts to supply enough oxygen to the body. The skin will become red as blood vessels dilate in an attempt to increase heat dissipation. The decrease in blood pressure will cause blood vessels to contract as heat stroke progresses, resulting in a pale or bluish skin colour. Complaints of feeling hot may be followed by chills and trembling, as is the case in fever. Some victims, especially young children, may suffer convulsions. Acute dehydration such as that accompanying heat stroke can produce nausea and vomiting; temporary blindness may also be observed. Eventually, as body organs begin to fail, unconsciousness and coma will result.

FIRST AID AND TREATMENT

The goal of the first aid should be bringing the body temperature to normal immediately in a step-wise manner but not suddenly. Heat stroke is a medical emergency requiring hospitalization, and the local emergency services should be notified as soon as possible. The victim should be moved to a cool area (indoors, or at least in the shade) and clothing removed to promote heat loss (passive cooling). Active cooling methods may be used: The person is bathed in cool water, a hyperthermia vest can be applied, however, wrapping the victim in wet towels or clothes can actually act as insulation and increase the body temperature. Cold compresses to the torso, head, neck, and groin will help cool the victim. A fan may be used to aid in evaporation of the water (evaporative method). Immersion in ice or cold water is dangeous as this may cause vasoconstriction in the skin, preventing heat from escaping the body core.

Immersing a victim into a bathtub of cool - but not cold - water (immersion method) is a recognized method of cooling. This method requires the effort of 4-5 persons and the victim should be monitored carefully during the treatment process. This should be avoided for an unconscious victim; if there is no alternative, the victim's head must be held above water.

Hydration is of paramount importance in cooling the victim. This is achieved by drinking water (Oral rehydration). Commercial isotonic drinks may be used as a substitute. Some authorities are opposed to giving any fluids, except by emergency personnel. Intravenous hydration (via a drip) is necessary if the victim is confused, unconscious, or unable to tolerate oral fluids.
Alcohol rubs will cause further dehydration and impairment of consciousness and should be avoided.

The victim's condition should be reassessed and stabilized by trained medical personnel. The victim's heart rate and breathing should be monitored, and CPR may be necessary if the victim goes into cardiac arrest.

The victim should be placed into the recovery position to ensure that the person's airway remains open.

ROLE OF HOMEOPATHY IN SUNSTROKE:

After providing the first aid, which is very essential, the victim can be treated with homeopathic drugs to reduce the effects caused or to even recover faster. Few of the homeopathic drugs can be taken as sunstroke prophylactics. Do consult a qualified homeopathic physician before using any of homeopathic medicines.

Following are few of the medicines which can be used in sunstroke victims based on the victim’s symptomatology.

Glonoine
One of the most efficient remedy which stimulates the heart and vasomotor centers in the medulla. The indications for its use will be pale face, fixed eyes, white tongue, full, round pulse, labored respiration, projectile and numerous vomiting preceded with headaches and sinking at the pit of the stomach. The temperature is high and oftentimes there is unconsciousness. It is also suitable for the after-effects of sunstroke.

ACONITE:
Aconite is useful in sunstroke where there is a paralyzing influence on the circulation because of the heat.

LACHESIS:
The patient is dizzy and faint; hot weather greatly fatigues the person.

Belladonna [Bell]
This is an excellent acute remedy. The symptomatology includes drowsiness, loss of consciousness, whizzing in the ears and constriction of the chest.

GELSEMIUM:
Another excellent remedy for sunstroke, with cerebral congestion, delirium, headache, high temperature and tendency to coma.

Natrum carbonicum [Nat-c]
This is best for the chronic effects of sunstroke and in headache which return in hot weather. Natrum carbonicum will sometimes calm very excitable and nervous persons during thunderstorms. Debility and headache from the sun.

And there are many more remedies which can be taken as preventive medications:

NATRUM MUR 6x:

A biochemical trituration that can be taken adults 3 tabs in the morning and 3 tabs in the evening while children above 2 years 2 tabs in the morning and 2 tabs in the evening.

FIVE PHOS 6x:
When there is excessive debility and weakness due to exhaustion. The dosage is same as Natrum Mur

Caution: Do consult a qualified homeopathic physician before taking any homeopathic treatment in any condition.

Do all homeopathic medicines look a like?

Well, to answer this question precisely we have to first know how the homeopathic medicines are prepared. Hahnemann had introduced a method of dynamization called “potentization” through which we can extract the medicinal power to the maximum extent. In this process as “alcohol” is the only base used for all medicines, all the homeopathic medicines (called as “dilutions” by homeopaths) will look alike.

What is the pricinciple of Homeopathy?

What is the principle of Homeopathy?

The whole story of homeopathy started when "Dr. Samuel Hahnemann", a German doctor in the 18th century has discovered a great healing principle. He was an allopathic doctor and had been using the crude methods of treatments of that time like vein-section (cutting veins, leeching (applying leeches to suck blood...) and lot many horrifying methods. He got vexed with the mode of treatments and even stopped pratising medicine. He became a translator and was translating many ancient literatures. At that time, he was delighted by understanding a great natural principle of healing and he named the pricinciple as "SIMILIA SIMILIBUS CURENTER" in Latin which means "Let likes be cured by likes," based on which the therauptic system "homeopathy" was developed, which means something like using a "diamond to cut a diamond."
